The energy delivered from electrical utilities has not increased drastically in price even though the demand is ever-growing. This can be largely attributed to the emergent practice of utilizing renewable energy. There are numerous people now that aim to be eco-friendly within their homes and it all started with the solar panel.

Home solar energy systems have been convenient to most residential customers due to the availability of the roof space. Knowing that the sun is constantly shining, having solar panels installed provides an immediate source for usage of low-powered devices.

However, as the market for other components like EVs, hybrid batteries, smart panels, and more are continuing to advance, maybe there’s a chance that solar panels will be dethroned from being the staple for residential energy. Besides, other systems that utilize wind and biogas are constantly developing for easy residential use.

One company that has been eying the possibilities in store for the future of residential clean energy is Span. This startup company has invested in making new products such as the smart electrical panel. The said high-end panel is capable of tracking and controlling behind-the-meter batteries, EV chargers, rooftop solar inverters, and other components with the use of a smartphone.

In comparison with another smart tech out there, the sale of ‘Brightbox’ battery systems by Sunrun has gone beyond the 10,000 mark. Meanwhile, Tesla’s Powerwall battery installations have surpassed the 100,000 mark. While the competition may be tough, Arch Rao, CEO of Span, has said that their competitors only focus on aspects like cost reduction but less on load controls and system integration.

This is what makes Span smart panels apart from other products. The cost of a single panel is equivalent to, if not, lesser than upgrading a typical panel with the inclusion of switches, transformers, and EV chargers. Aside from the affordability, what customers can expect is the amount of control they have on the interaction of the produced energy.

On a recent podcast, Rao discussed the possible technological changes for home energy production and addressed important topics as the company moves on forward. Here are some of them:

  • The method of selling and managing the distributed energy resources
  • The target buyer and the standard interaction before, during, and after the purchase
  • The scale of work towards the mass market
  • The consumer’s interaction with the distributed energy resources

So, to answer the question of what can dethrone the solar, the answer lies on Span’s smart panel. Their impact will only be a matter of time.
