CERC officials from the U.S. and China agreed on mutually beneficial areas for collaborative research for CERC’s fifth and newest research track on medium- and heavy-duty trucks, called Truck Research Utilizing Collaborative Knowledge (also referred to as CERC TRUCK). The research areas are defined in a Joint Work Plan (JWP), which is signed by CERC representatives from both countries. CERC officials also agreed to a Technology Management Plan for the new consortia that establishes a framework for protecting intellectual property.

The vision of CERC TRUCK is to contribute to dramatic improvements in technologies that have the potential to reduce both emissions and the dependence of commercial trucks on oil. This new consortium will focus on developing cost-effective measures to improve the on-road freight efficiency of medium and heavy duty trucks by more than 50% compared to 2016. The collaboration will seek to leverage the complementary strengths of each country’s intellectual and research capacities, and to accelerate the advancement of technologies for clean trucks through joint research and development.

Directors for the consortium are Thomas Wallner from Argonne National Laboratory in the U.S. and Shu Gequn from Tianjin University in China. The next step for CERC TRUCK is to develop Ten-point plans, scheduled for Spring 2017. The Ten-point plans, which are jointly developed by the lead researchers for each project, constitute clear commitments for future work and form the basis for mutual accountability for CERC TRUCK research and progress.
